With his racing successions of tones and unprecedented high notes, Roy Eldridge led the way to bop. Eldridge's trumpet dances along brightly in these live performances, interpreting melodies with dramatic punctuations and breaks. Above all, he's a consummate entertainer, his artistry aimed at lifting listeners out of their seats. His horn is unquenchable; he plays and replays the songs in these extended recordings in exuberant attempts to outshine his earlier phrases. Old favorites such as "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" are showcases for this combo's musical showmanship and invention. Oscar Peterson has a spirited piano solo, and Niels Henning Orsted-Pederson's bass is given space for a beautiful and exhilarating chorus, before Eldridge takes a final whirl on the Harold Arlen standard. The trumpeter plays with tireless fervor, and the listener is the beneficiary.
