Full performer name: Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars. Lighthouse All-Stars: Bob Cooper, Bud Shank, Buddy Collette, Claude Williamson, Sonny Clarke, Max Roach, Stan Levey, Howard Rumsey. Recorded in February 1954 and September 1956. Originally released on Contemporary (3520). This CD reissue brings back a couple of interesting sessions. In 1954, tenor saxophonist Bob Cooper switched to oboe and English horn (being among the very first to solo in jazz on both instruments) on eight selections. He was teamed with Bud Shank (who sticks to flute), pianist Claude Williamson, bassist/leader Howard Rumsey, and drummer Max Roach; the results seem to define cool West Coast jazz. Cooper was quite fluent on his instruments, and the straight-ahead numbers (six group originals, "Night in Tunisia" and "Bags' Groove") are quite enjoyable. In addition, this set has four selections from 1956 with Buddy Collette taking Shank's spot on flute and Cooper joined by Rumsey, pianist Sonny Clark, and drummer Stan Levey. Collette's atmospheric "Blue Sands" and "A Bit of Basie" are memorable. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
