The Church Keys know their history. The quintet takes its name from an essential item of surfer gear, the archetypal beer-bottle opener immortalized in a classic early '60s instrumental surf hit. There's more than a little surfy reverb action in Doug Dellefemine and Jon "Sugarboy" Chalmers' twangy guitars, especially on the wild "Church Key Stomp." But The Church Keys don't limit themselves to one era.
The 15 tracks on the band's debut album mix surf sounds with rockabilly wildness, R&B grit (saxophonist Lars Espensen is a honker in the King Curtis tradition), country sweetness, and punkish aggression. WORK WITH IT tops the whole thing with tongue-in-cheek lyrics on songs like the wild "Who Drank My Beer?" and the sassy "Pigtails Plaid Skirt." Most of the time, The Church Keys sound not unlike a less feral version of Norton Records labelmates the Flat Duo Jets crossed with the sly revivalism of their obvious heroes, The Cramps.
