Released on roots-rock indie label Norton Records (founded by ex-Cramps drummer Miriam Linna and partner Billy Miller), LOOK AT THAT CAVEMAN GO!! is a collection of live cuts that mix favorite covers with loopy Hasil Adkins originals. Sex and pursuit of the fairer sex is a mainstay of Adkins' songs, and when he's not breathing hard and playing dissonant guitar chords during "Hammer Hunch (The Crusher)" (which refers to a lascivious '50s dance), he's railing at being mistreated throughout the chugging "Mean Mean Woman."
About the only time Adkins slows the pace is on such down-and-out laments as "My Blue Star" and "Still Missing You." Although CAVEMAN is plagued by less-than-stellar sound quality, the native West Virginian makes up for it with his over-the-top exuberance--particularly on covers of Rufus Thomas ("Walkin' The Dog"), Merle Haggard ("Today I Started Loving You Again"), and Jerry Lee Lewis ("Mean Woman Blues"), the last of whom Adkins resembles vocally. In hearing this one-man band tornado in a live setting, it's easy to trace how the riotous, gut-bucket approach of this iconoclast influenced future square pegs like the Cramps and Jon Spencer.
