ミッドナイト・オイルは1972年、シドニーで結成、当初はサーフパンク色が強かったものの、独特なダンスを伴いながら長身のヴォーカル ピーター・ギャレットが強烈なメッセージを発する様子などから世界的な人気を博し、地元オーストラリアはもちろん世界中にパンクの一時代を知らしめたバンドだ。活動時の逸話には事欠かず、早くから核兵器撲滅を訴え1983年のアルバム『Red Sails in the Sunset』(「When The Generals Talk」「Koscuisko」収録)は日本でレコーディングされ(この頃から政治的なメッセージがより顕著になっていく)、1985年のEP『Species Deceases』(「Hercules」「Progress」収録)は広島/長崎の惨事から40年目に敢えて発表されている。1990年には米エクソン社がタンカー事故で海洋に石油を流出した事件を受けて、ニューヨークのエクソン社前にトラックで乗り付けゲリラ・ライヴを行い、世界中の新聞一面で取り上げられたことも広く知られている。2000年のシドニー・オリンピック閉会式でのパフォーマンス時には"Sorry"と書かれた衣装を着て登場。19～20世紀にかけてアボリジニの子供を親元から略奪する政策が行われていたことを風化させないための喚起であった。1978年のアルバム『The Blue Meanie』(「Run By Night」収録)でのデビューから2002年にピーター・ギャレットがオーストラリア政界入り(環境大臣まで上りつめた)するまでの約四半世紀にミッドナイト・オイルが送り続けたメッセージを、最新リマスター音源でCD2枚にコンパイル。無二のパンク・バンドの真髄が凝縮されている。
