Following their critically lauded debut, 2010's 7AM, Brooklyn textural indie electronic duo Teengirl Fantasy return with sophomore effort Tracer. Shedding some of the bleary-eyed haze that defined their earlier work, Tracer relies on more focused composition and detailed post-production editing, rendering an end product more meticulous than their often unhinged earlier work. The album also forgoes the use of samples entirely, relying on sequencers, heavily layered keyboards, and various electronics where earlier songs were built around manipulated samples. The songs touch on elements of house, techno, R&B, and other styles, filtering these different influences through the increasingly sophisticated lens of the duo's maximized production. The album is split between instrumental tracks and vocal songs featuring a wide range of guest singers, including Laurel Halo, Animal Collective's Panda Bear, and Romanthony, most celebrated for his appearance on Daft Punk's classic track "One More Time." ~ Fred Thomas
