Morrison released What's Wrong with This Picture? for Blue Note back in 2003. He re-signed to legendary jazz label in large part because musician and producer Don Was signed on to head it. Featuring ten new songs, Morrison plays guitar, alto saxophone, and occasional keyboards. Employing his trademark Celtic soul, the album also showcases incursions into jazz and blues -- and sometimes all three within the same tune. Morrison recorded the sessions in Belfast, and produced them. He used his road band augmented by guest musicians.

ヴァン・モリソンは凄い。いや、そんなことは百も承知だったが、前作から4年というキャリア史上もっとも長い期間を待たされたことで、彼の比類のなさを心から再認識した。2003年以来のブルー・ノート復帰作ということもあってか、本作にはたおやかなジャズの芳香が漂っている。が、もちろんジャズそのものではない。ほとんどの楽曲はブルースやリズム&ブルース・マナーと言ってもいいが、トロンボーンやサックスのジャジーなソロが入り、御大の魂の底から込み上げるような、もはや白だの黒だのということさえ超越した独自のソウルフル歌唱が乗ることで、唯一無二な〈ヴァンのジャズ世界〉がここには立ち現れている。およそ駄作などない人だが、これまた堂々たる傑作。やはりヴァン・モリソンは凄い。
