Hoobastank moved back to indie status with the release of their fifth studio album, Fight or Flight, produced by Gavin Brown, on Open E Records in 2012, ending their decade-long run at Island Records. It brings Hoobastank full circle, leaving them once again in control of their own destiny, just as they were in the 1990s when, barely out of high school, they emerged as part of of a Southern California post-grunge hard rock scene that included bands like Linkin Park and Incubus.

延期に延期を重ねていた5枚目のオリジナル作がようやくお目見え! 美メロから激情パートへと雪崩れ込む、つまりはフーバスが考案したといっても過言ではない勝利の方程式を存分に駆使しており、現行のUSメインストリーム・ロックに与えた影響力のデカさを改めて実感させられる。また今回は歌詞も素晴らしく(ゆえに対訳付きの日本盤をオススメしたい!)、いまだ地道に成長している様子が窺えて感動してしまった。
