The Stages of which Melanie C sings are the ones on the Great White Way -- the ones of Broadway, the ones responsible for every one of the tunes on this 2012 exercise in standards. It may have been released in 2012 but its heart belongs the late '60s, with almost every one of the songs dating from that golden decade and the arrangements also pledging allegiance to that golden era of MOR crossovers. That Melanie C isn't quite a vocal powerhouse doesn't really work against her, as Stages is designed not as a showcase for her vocal skills but rather as a celebration of the sound of those '60s middle-of-the-road pop records and, in that respect, it's engaging: Melanie C is game and producer Peter-John Vettese gives her a shimmering, glimmering surrounding, so this winds up as an entertaining tribute to the golden age of the Great White Way. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
