Denver, Colorado-based folk-rock trio the Lumineers have a pretty interesting sound, an Americana mesh of folk, rock, and gospel similar in tone to the Waterboys or an alt-folk version of Bob Dylan circa Desire, thanks in no small part to Neyla Pekarek's inventive cello. There are some very good tracks on this debut album, including the chamber honky tonk of "Dead Sea," the delightfully goofy but ultimately sad and elegant "Submarines," and "Stubborn Love," which manages to be bright and chiming while also being haunting and mournful. Not everything clicks at that level, but each track is inventive, and when the songwriting and arrangements cross paths perfectly, as they do in the above songs, this is a delightful band. ~ Steve Leggett

本国アメリカでインディ・レーベルDualtone Recordsから先行リリースされ、Billboardフォーク・アルバム・チャート2位、同トップ・インディペンデント・アルバム3位、同トップ・ロック・アルバム13位、そしてトップ200アルバム17位に食い込むスマッシュ・ヒットとなり、にわかに話題を集めているフォーク・ロック・トリオのデビュー・アルバム。アメリカ地域以外では英DECCAが発売権を獲得し、ワールドワイド・デビューが実現した。メンバーはWesley Schultz(g, lead vo)、Jeremiah Fraites(ds, vo)、Neyla Pekarek( cello, mandolin, p, vo)の3人。ニューヨーク、ニュージャージーからデンヴァーへと活動の拠点を移し、そのアコースティックでオーガニックなフォーク・ロック・サウンドに磨きをかけた。そしてFoo Fighters、The Strokes、The Dead Science、Neon Nights等のエンジニア/プロデューサーとして知られるRyan Hadlockをプロデューサーに迎えて制作されたのが本作である。全曲、メンバー自身のソングライティングによるものだ。

紅一点のチェロ奏者を含むコロラドのフォーク・トリオ。じわじわとセールスを伸ばし、気付けば全米11位に喰い込んでいた彼らのデビュー作が日本盤化された。〈マムフォード&サンズへの回答〉とも言われているが、なるほど、掛け声を駆使したり、ドラムを打ち鳴らしたりして賑やかに盛り上げる曲もある。しかし、全体に滲む寂寥感こそがこのグループの持ち味。茫漠たる荒野に一人佇んでいるような気分をたっぷり味わえる。
