何と力強くて、生命力に満ちた作品だろう。前作でワーナー傘下のマヴェリックを離れてから4年。結婚と出産を経て辿りついた境地がこの8作目にある。〈苦境と希望の光〉というタイトル、それに立ち止まって明るい空を見上げているようなジャケのアートワークでも表現されているが、苦悩のトンネルを抜け、いまアラニスは充実した精神と内から沸き起こる活力を音楽に込めたいモードにあるのだろう。怒りの表現が消え失せたわけではないが、闇よりも光の強さを絶対的に信じている彼女がここにいる。プロデューサーは前作に引き続きガイ・シグスワース。エレクトリックな音を取り込みつつ、それによってむしろ彼女自身の体温や生命力を対比的に際立たせてみせている。純粋にいままででもっとも良い曲揃い。
