Arguably the most quintessential London artist to appear at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games, Ray Davies and his legendary Brit-pop outfit the Kinks have become synonymous with the capital city thanks to a back catalog filled with unique reflections on their hometown. It's quite surprising then that two-CD 45-track collection, Waterloo Sunset: The Best of the Kinks & Ray Davies, is the first time that their most cherished London-centric songs have been assembled onto one disc. Alongside signature numbers such as the Carnaby Street lampooning of "Dedicated Follower of Fashion" and the ode to dancehall culture of "Come Dancing," the clever musical travelog also contains lesser-known material such as the gentle brass shuffle of Dave Davies' "Fortis Green" (taken from his 2002 solo album, Bug), and several Ray Davies tracks including the Jools Holland collaboration "Yours Truly, Confused N10" and his Christmas duet with Chrissie Hynde ("Postcard from London"). Elsewhere, there's a choral version of "Waterloo Sunset" featuring the Crouch End Festival Chorus and several live tracks plucked from the band's 1980 live album, One for the Road ("Where Have All the Good Times Gone," "Victoria"). Of course, for the casual fan, it's the opening disc which is likely to hold the most appeal. 14 Top Ten singles are present, including their three U.K. number ones, "Sunny Afternoon," "You Really Got Me," and "Tired of Waiting for You," and their equally celebrated hits, "Lola," "All Day & All of the Night," and "Autumn Almanac," all of which sound as majestic as they did during the original British Invasion. A few debatable omissions aside (Village Green Preservation Society is ignored entirely), Waterloo Sunset impressively encapsulates everything that made the Kinks one of the most iconic and influential bands of their generation. ~ Jon O'Brien
