othing about FREE POPCORN is quite what it seems. There are analogue keyboards galore, but this is no Stereolab-style retro worship. Most of the songs feature syncopated rhythms straight out of the Funky Drummer textbook, but they're played live, not sampled. And though many of the tracks are defined by urgent, yelping white-boy rap, this no Beastie Boys rip--in fact, it's a far cry from anyone's idea of hip-hop. Though they sound nothing alike, the closest comparison would be with the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, simply because of the way both groups synthesize and redefine African-American styles through an indie-rock filter. It's that very filtration process that gives FREE POPCORN its edge and originality.|
