Pole: Stefan Betke. Like so many other '90s electronica projects, Pole consists of one person; Berlin studio whiz Stefan Betke. Here, Betke emerges as an innovator in the field of electronic music. CD1 isn't techno or ambient, but it contains elements of those styles subverted for Betke's idiosyncratic purposes. Ultimately, it's most accurate to consider Betke a minimalist. In an extremely low-key, understated way, he uses dub and turntable techniques to create a flowing body of sound. It often sounds as if the studio is playing itself, the main sonic ingredients being the scratches and pops of needle on vinyl fed through echoes and loops. There are sophisticated undercurrents of rhythm and texture moving through the tracks, but like any minimalist work they require close listening. As Betke is a conceptualist at heart (and a talented one), such attention will be richly rewarded.

商品の紹介

Spin (4/99, p.168) - 8 (out of 10) - "...With a messaging mid-range and almost lambent bass tones, CD1 is a luxuriant soak in the analog bubble bath..." Entertainment Weekly (4/2/99, p.94) - "...Sounds dreadful, but Betke's dub robotics are beautifully expansive, and the sputtering `noise' that scaffolds them is fascinating. Nostalgic and futuristic, it's a perfect soundtrack for pondering Y2K or romancing that special cyborg." - Rating: B+ Alternative Press (4/02, p.96) - Included in AP's "10 Essential Laptop Techo Records" - "...Cuts techno loose from its rhythmic anchor and sets it adrift..." Magnet (4/99, p.78) - "...Pole burrows deep into a valley of reverberations and sparks, locating the place where dub echoes come to die, and coaxes them into new life....the bass is bolder and sounds whiz across the stereo spectrum like St. Elmo's fire dancing from pole to pole." The Wire (1/99, p.27) - Included in Wire's "50 Records Of The Year [1998]" Muzik (9/98, p.83) - 5 stars out of 5 - "An absolutely stunning album divided into 4 separate movements....this still surprises with some stunningly beautiful melodics."
