Helium: Mary Timony (vocals, guitar); Ash Bowie (bass); Shawn King Devlin (percussion). Additional personnel: Mitch Easter (slide guitar). Recorded in November 1996. Personnel: Mitch Easter (slide guitar). Recording information: Fidelitorium (11/1996). The NO GUITARS EP serves as the perfect musical bridge between THE DIRT OF LUCK and THE MAGIC CITY, possessing much of the dark indie-rock of the former while hinting at the medieval explorations of the latter. While the title doesn't mean Helium is abandoning the eponymous instrument, it could stand for the group's rejection of conventional indie-rock structure. The direct reference for the title is from a line in the first track, the almost shockingly poppy "Silver Strings," a light, breezy rocker that wouldn't have been out of place during Fleetwood Mac's heyday. But Helium wouldn't be Helium without a shadowy twist, and there are some definite hidden daggers in the lyrics here. As the six-song EP progresses, hints of the more mythical flair of Helium's second full-length CD begin to emerge. "King of the Electric Guitars" encapsulates the band's earlier and later styles, while the closing track "Riddle of the Chamberlain" poses as a three-minute Gothic pop song before changing gears twice while providing an engaging seven minutes of music. NO GUITARS is a unique collection showcasing Helium's endless transformation.

商品の紹介

Option (9-10/97, pp.98-99) - "...Middle-earth sounds alive at last, now that our heroine has shaped up Tolkein-esque tomes into lean, succinct songs..." Paste (magazine) - "Think about how brilliant that is: taking a male-centric genre that prized braggadocious playing over emotion and siphoning it through a feminist mindset."
