Freddy Fender's proficient delivery is captured here in all its glory on Live at the Renaissance Center. "You'll Lose a Good Thing" and "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" are issued by the graying sextet with the energy of garage rockers, the former sporting accentuated Hawaiian slide guitar from Vern Monnett, the latter with Freddy shedding his own rhythm instrument to sing the perennial favorite to an appreciative packed house. Don't think this is strictly adult contemporary fare -- the countrified Mexican-American artist has fun with covers ranging from "Margaritaville," which suits him well, to "Talk to Me" and a rave-up version of Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs' timeless "Wooly Bully," including a nod to Neal Hefti's "Batman" with keyboardist Conrad Askland adding an almost ? & the Mysterians vibe to the '60s classic. Absent is Texas Tornado mate Doug Sahm's "Mendocino," but why quibble about it? The set selection is otherwise flawless. Lead guitarist Mark Tate looks like he escaped Bachman-Turner Overdrive and goes through Jimi Hendrix's eat-the-guitar moves while delivering some blistering sounds that don't upset the senior set in attendance here. Crooning "Before the Last Teardrop Falls" with the rhythm section of bassist Edward Jurado and drummer Rhys Clark, Fender's combination South of the Border/neo-falsetto voice is pleasing and effective. Excellent interview footage as well as still photos and a succinct biography make this collection, directed by D. Domenic DiCarlo, most impressive. ~ Joe Viglione
