オランダVINYL MASTERPIECE/PTG RECORDSで『MASTERPIECE』シリーズと共に2枚看板として安定した人気を誇る『NIGHTTIME LOVERS』の第16弾。今回も勿論一切手抜きなし。しかもすべて12インチ・バージョンと、このシリーズでしか得られない満足感は相変わらずのコンパイル。

Nine of the 13 songs on the 16th volume of PTG's Nighttime Lovers touched the Billboard R&B chart, which makes it one of the least obscure sets in the series. Freddie Jackson's smooth-gliding "He'll Never Love You" managed to crack the Top Ten in 1985, while Mtume's undervalued slow jam "C.O.D. (I'll Deliver)" -- a tremendous showcase for the group's Tawatha Agee -- came close to matching it. This is another mix of the known (Luther Vandross in near peak form, the Brothers Johnson treading water during the early days of new jack swing) and not-so-known (including the Ed Howard-produced RCA project Fredi Grace & Rhinestone, who are present with their lone charting single). The sound could be much better. Anyone with a slight degree of sensitivity to imperfections will have trouble dealing with the snares on Stanley Clarke and Howard Hewett's "Heaven Sent You." ~ Andy Kellman
