ロンドン交響合唱団の指揮者を務めるなど、合唱指揮でも優れた手腕を発揮したヒコックス。
エルガーの3大オラトリオ、「ゲロンティアスの夢」、「使徒たち」、「神の国」より前となる1896年に作曲、初演が行われた「生命の光」は、日本でも2010年に大友直人&東響によって日本初演が実現し、話題をよんだエルガーの知られざる宗教作品であり、ヒコックスの代表盤の1つである。
