Co-produced with Stanley Clarke, In the Dark embraces synthesizers, drum machines, and hip-hop beats, and while the results could have been far worse, Ayers sounds like a follower, not a leader. While the breakthrough success of Herbie Hancock's landmark "Rockit" proved the creative and commercial viability of rap-inspired electro-funk, Ayers' footing seems unsure. The risque club hit "Poo Poo La La" mistakes irreverence for relevance, and even more inventive entries like the title track suffer under the weight of the dated, brittle production. ~ Jason Ankeny

先だってリイシューされた『YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED』と2イン1でCD化されていた経緯はありますが、今回単体では初となるリイシューの『IN THE DARK』。デザイン性も抜群な“猫ジャケ”とともに、スタンリー・クラークとの共同プロデュース、グローヴァー・ワシントンJr.やトム・ブラウンなど錚々たる面子の参加など、1980年代ロイ・エアーズ作品の中でも特に注目を集める作品。サウンド云々が1970年代の絶対的レア・グルーヴ・マスターの顔とは一味違っているのは当然ですが、一歩先を行く時代感覚は1984年でも当然のごとく発揮している好盤、ボーナス・トラックを加えたエクスパンデット・エディションとしてリリースされます。リズム・トラックは基本的に打ち込み、シンセも縦横無尽に使われているが、それらの機械的な部分を無機質なものではなく、クールでグルーヴィーな印象にしてしまうのはやはりロイ・エアーズならではと言ったところか。ロイ・ブラウンのトランペットも活躍する「Sexy、Sexy、Sexy」、この時代らしい洗練さに満ちたフュージョン・ナンバー「Compadre」、埋め尽くすようなマリンバのフレーズが心地良い「Blast The Box」、自身のラップとミキ・ハワードが強烈な印象を残す「Poo Poo La La」などグルーヴ・ナンバーでも傑作が目白押し。切ないメロディと朴訥ながら味わいあるヴォーカルが映えるミッド「I Can't Help It」はアルバムのアクセントとして最高の役割を果たしており、トータル的に考えてもやはり80'sクール・ファンクの中では最高峰とも言うべき内容。これは見逃せません！
