The stateliness and swaggering qualities of tenor saxophonist Ben Webster remained striking even late in his career. While he wasn't playing with the greatest band or at peak form, Webster still provided many memorable solos and moments on this date, which was reissued in 1989 on the French Esoldun label as part of their concert series. From the spry, spirited pace of "I Got Rhythm" to the moving ballads "Old Folks" and "My Romance," Webster demonstrated the allure and appeal of swing-era tenor. Although this wouldn't be an accurate starting point for anyone to begin evaluating Ben Webster's importance, it's well worth adding to your collection. ~ Ron Wynn|
