HOLIDAYS IN EDEN, Marillion's sixth album and second featuring vocalist Steve Hogarth, finds the prog-rock legends veering in a new direction, keeping much of the bombast but opting for a more pop-oriented sound. While opening track "Splintering Heart" contains the cascading keyboards and flamboyant tones most associated with the well-traveled British outfit, "Cover My Eyes (Pain and Heaven)" with its elements of U2 and Springsteen, would not seem out of place on top 40 radio of 1991. The hooks are fast and furious on the title track and throughout, but for the progressive fan concerned about the change, a second disc is available with re-recordings in a more familiar vein.
