名ソプラノ、ハント追悼盤
グラインドボーン音楽祭のシリーズ、新刊はヘンデルの「テオドーラ」です。グラインドボーン音楽祭はたびたびバロックオペラを取り上げている実績があり、ことに近年は大御所ウィリアム・クリスティがエイジ・オブ・エンライトメント管弦楽団を率いての上演がたいへんに好評を博しています。この1996年の「テオドーラ」はその先鞭をつけたものでした。この作品は英語のオラトリオですが、音楽はいたってオペラな作品で、舞台上演も度々行われています。このグラインドボーンの上演では、米国のソプラノ、ドーン・アプショウの透明で切々と歌い上げる美声と、英国のトップ・カウンター・テノール、デイヴィッド・ダニエルズの柔らかな優しい歌が見事に合致して、絶大な効果を挙げています。またミンコフスキとの多くの共演で知られる米国のテノール、リチャード・クロフトや、2006年に癌のため53 歳で亡くなったロレイン・ハントが準主役で加わるという贅沢さ（ハントはかつてharmonia mundi USAの録音ではテオドーラを歌っていました）。それまで道徳的なばかりで劇的効果に乏しい作品と思われていた「テオドーラ」が傑作であることを一気に世に知らしめることになりました。この年の上演はビデオ収録されDVDにもなっていますが、ピーター・セラーズの演出が良くも悪くも刺激的でしたので、落ち着いて音楽を聞くには音楽だけの方が楽しめることでしょう。
