At the heart of Yuko Fujiyama's music is a searching lyricism. Drawing as much on the aesthetic of contemporary classical music as on the jazz tradition, her lines probe the edges of tonality with the underlying tone center always shifting. Within this ambiguous tonal fabric, she weaves poetic turns of phrase, trying to express in the words of a poem recited on the session "the constant and deeper stillness." Not that she can't pound and rampage when she wants, as she does frequently on Re-Entry. On this, her second session for the avant-garde boutique label CIMP, she expresses this using a bold palette that includes Roy Campbell's ripe, bruised trumpet and Reggie Nicholson's polyrhythmic drumming with bassist Wilbur Morris' warm, woody pulse felt as much as heard in the center. The opening two tracks, the two-part "Synaesthesis," most fully explore the dichotomy between the leader's fragile lyricism and the aggressiveness of her sideman. Campbell explodes with declarative sentences and the pianist responds in kind, adding harmonic subtleties. The first part is an anxious ballad and the second part explodes with the ferocity Nicholson implied in his drumming all along. The other tracks parse out the varying threads of Fujiyama's aesthetic, from the high energy of "Whirl" to the delicacy of the closing solo piano track, "Sadness Is." This last track includes her recitation of a poem by Japanese poet Shuntaro Tanikawa, whose work is also featured on "If Words," on which producer Bob Rusch intones the verse. ~ David Dupont
