Silversun Pickups had a bit of a breakthrough with 2009's Swoon, even garnering a Best New Artist nod at the Grammy Awards. Building upon Swoon's layered melodicism and once again showcasing lead singer/songwriter Brian Aubert's knack for evocative, introspective lyrics and fiery, multi-dubbed guitar parts, Neck of the Woods is an even more infectious and nuanced affair. Working with Grammy-winning producer Jacknife Lee, Silversun Pickups have perfected their mix of epic noise rock and ambient guitar anthems. Tracks like the tightly wound "Make Believe" and the equally sinister-sounding "Busy Bees" are dramatic nuggets of impending pop doom. All of the cuts on Neck of the Woods are perfect pop songs that still make room for Aubert's raging and cinematic guitar. ~ Matt Collar

世界で100万枚以上のアルバム・セールスを記録しているSilversun Pickups。前作『Swoon』に続く約3年ぶりのニュー・アルバム、『NECK OF THE WOODS』がこの5月に発売決定!プロデュースは、R.E.M.やSnow Patrolなどを手掛けているJacknife Lee。ちなみにレコーディングで使用したJacknife Leeのホーム・スタジオの場所がフロントマン/ギタリストのBrian Aubertが子供時代を過ごした南カリフォルニアのトパンガ・キャニオンだったという嬉しい偶然もあったそう。デビュー当初は「スマパンの再来」と騒がれた彼らだが、Brian Aubertが最近SPIN誌に語ったところによると、今作は「ホラー映画」のような作品だそう。「『SWOON』は、その当時自分が感じていたことを表現したアルバムだったけど、これは何が今の自分を作りあげたのか、それを探る作品になっている。どうやって今の自分が出来たのかを知ろうとしているアルバムなんだ」とは本人の弁。サウンド的には、ドラムが雰囲気作りに大きな役割を担っているとのことだが、彼ららしいギター・ロックは健在。「今までにもあったサウンドが爆発する瞬間は勿論あるけど、今作の少し病んだ雰囲気を壊したくなかったから、曲全体を大音量のギターで埋め尽くすようなことはしたくなかった」ディストーション・ギターはそのままに、今まで使ったことのなかったドリーミーで風変りなサウンドを取り入れ、大きな広がりを見せるSilversun Pickupsの新章に注目を!

全米7位に喰い込んだ前作から3年ぶり、ジャックナイフ・リーをプロデューサーに迎えたこの3作目でも、彼らは変拍子を織り交ぜた緻密なアンサンブルでもって、90年代オルタナの美学を伝えてくれる。だが、〈スマパンのフォロワー〉と見る向きも、そろそろいかがなものかと思う。というのも、本作ではディストーション・ギターを控えめにし、フォークっぽい楽曲にもトライ。独自の路線を印象付けているのだから。
