You cannot help hearing the ghost of the classic Ornette Coleman Quartet, as trumpeter Carlson evokes the ragged sound of Don Cherry, while his partners - tenor saxophonist Eric Hipp, bassist Shawn McGloin, and drummer Scott Neumann - stomp along in electrifying camaraderie. Four of the eleven tunes were written by Sun Ra, and five of the remainder were contributed, at least in part, by Carlson, who favors hip melodies performed meticulously by the front line horn duo. Carlson's solos tear at the seams, sputtering and lunging toward a moving target. Hipp knocks some solid punches that hit more often than not, while Neumann barks hard on drums. When these fellows are on - which they are for most of the time - they are about as good as it gets, with the trumpet and tenor gliding over the rambunctious rhythm section. ~ Steve Loewy
