Like its predecessor, this is a who'-who of some of the leading jazz artists from the CIMP label in a fascinating and wholly successful set of original, mostly improvised compositions. Highlights abound, with different combinations of instruments on each cut. Paul Smoker plays a deadly trumpet with Jay Rosen on drums on the invigorating "Standard," while bassists Dominic Duval and Peter Kowald open with a stunning duo on "Endorpher." Other players include the amazing Joe McPhee on soprano saxophone and pocket trumpet; Mark Whitecage on soprano sax, clarinets and clarisax (!); and Davis Prentice on violin. The two longest pieces, "Wow Wow II" and "Fractals.5," feature all seven musicians with some of the best free improvisations on disc. This CD, along with its earlier companion, offer about as good an introduction to these aces of the avant-garde as you are likely to find. ~ Steve Loewy
