Eastern Washington burg Spokane had a rip-roaring underground revolt music scene. From 1977-1983, contagions of creative weirdos formed D.I.Y. scenes in little urban pockets all over, and the most self-contained were particularly unusual. (Three hours from Seattle, Spokane lacked even the spotty fraternization of L.A. to Vancouver bands.) Like Vancouver Complication, the range of oddball expression is striking, such as founding, Devo-esque new wavers Sweet Madness, the dirty punk Strangulon, the art rock P-P-Ku, and eventually, garage hardcore from the actually familiar Vampire Lezbos playing the wild scene at Spokane's CBGB, Moe's Body Shop club. The 1983-1988 punk stuff, after the national indie explosion, remains belligerent and lively.
