テキサス州サン・アントニオ出身のシンガー・ソングライター。メキシコ移民の家族に生まれ、兄弟に有名パーカッショニストのCoke EscovedoとPete Escovedo、そしてPeteの娘＝姪っ子にSheila Eがいる。またハード・ロック・バンドThe DragonsをやっているMario、パンク・ロック・バンドThe ZerosをやっているJavierも兄弟、という、音楽ファミリーである。1980年代はThe Nunsというパンク・バンドで活動し、その後オルタナ・カントリー・ロック・バンドTrue Believers、Rank & Fileでの活動を経てソロに転向。『Gravity』(1992)、『Thirteen Years』(1994)、『With These Hands』(1996)、『Bourbonitis Blues』(1999)、『A Man Under the Influence』(2001)等の作品を送り出したが、2003年に原因不明の病気により活動を休止。その闘病を支援するトリビュート・アルバム『Por Vida: A Tribute to the Songs of Alejandro Escovedo』には、彼を慕う多くのミュージシャン、例えばSteve Earle、Jon Dee Graham、Lucinda Williams、John Cale、Jennifer Warnes、Ian Hunter、The Jayhawks、Son Voltや、彼の親族であるPete Escovedo、Sheila E.、Javier Escovedo、The Dragons（Mario Escovedo）等が参加した。2005年に病気を克服してシーンに復帰。2006年に復帰作『Boxing Mirror』、2008年にTony Viscontiプロデュースによる『Real Animal』をリリースしている。2010年『Street Songs of Love』以来2年ぶりのニュー・アルバムとなる本作でも、相変わらず切れのいい理屈抜きに楽しくストレートな大人のアメリカン・ロックを聴かせてくれている。

Big Station, Alejandro Escovedo's eleventh studio album, picks up where his 2010 recording, Street Songs of Love, left off. Once more produced by Tony Visconti, it contains 11 originals -- most co-written with Chuck Prophet. Most of these tracks are uptempo rockers, with a scant few featuring his now-signature ballad style with horn- and string-laden arrangements. Topically, he addresses everything from his own decline and disillusionment with his longtime residence Austin, Texas in "Bottom of the World," the Mexican drug wars ("Sally Was a Cop"), and even offers a pop number in "Party People."

レビュー

コーク・エスコヴェードの弟で、シド・ヴィシャスのマブダチだったサンアントニオ生まれのシンガー・ソングライターがイカした新作を作り上げた。すべてチャック・プロフェットとの共作曲で占められた本作は、アレハンドロのルーツ志向とプロデュースを務めるトニー・ヴィスコンティのポップセンスの合致ぶりが見事で、幅広い層を取り込めそうな魅力がある。ラストを飾るラテン名曲“Sabor A Mi"のカヴァーも泣けるな。
