Folila is Amadou & Mariam's first album of new studio material since 2008's international hit Welcome to Mali. Mali's first couple in music is once again produced by Marc-Antoine Moreau, who has worked with the pair for the entirety of their musical career. The album's basic tracks were recorded in New York and recut in Bamako. The best tracks were chosen from each location. Several guests appear on the set, including countryman Bassekou Kouyate on ngoni, rapper Theophilus London, Nick Zinner (of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and TV on the Radio.

2011年FUJI ROCK FESTIVALへの出演も果たしたマリはバマコの夫婦デュオ、Amadou & Mariam。2009年にリリースされ、世界的に高い評価を受けたグラミー･ノミネート作『Welcome To Mali』に続くこの作品は、ニューヨークとバマコでレコ―ディングされたが、多彩なゲストを迎え、自分たちをルーツをしっかりと保ちながらもグローバルな作品となっている。アルバムのプロデュースを手掛けるのは、彼らと長年仕事をしてきたプロデューサー、Marc-Antoine Moreau。そして彼らのサウンドに華を添えるのは、Santigold、TV on the Radio、Jake Shears（Scissor Sisters）、Nick Zinner(Yeah Yeah Yeahs)、Theophilus London、そしてBassekou Kouyateといったダンスからロック、ヒップホップまで幅広いジャンルのアーティストたち。西アフリカのブルース・ロックの伝統にゲストが持ち込むサウンドをミックスして、国境もジャンルも時代も超えた音楽を生み出している二人。今作もタイトルのFolila(マリで話されているバンバラ語で“音楽”を意味する)に相応しく滋味豊かな音楽作品となっている。
