Liner Note Author: Charles McCardell. There's far too much sweat and grit in dozens of these songs to justify Smooth Soul as an appropriate title. There's plenty of smooth soul here, though. In fact, there are several varieties of soul across this ten-disc, 150-track box set from Time Life. Most of what is here is essential, including the Spinners' "I'll Be Around," Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness," Luther Ingram's "If Loving You Is Wrong (I Don't Want to Be Right)," Bloodstone's "Natural High," Aretha Franklin's "You Make Me Feel Like (A Natural Woman)," and, perhaps the least smooth of all, James Brown's "I Got You (I Feel Good)." Several artists appear between two and four times, so the box could be more diverse, but this makes for a quality building block of late-'60s and early-'70s R&B. ~ Andy Kellman
