As its whimsical title suggests, Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose finds Beth Jeans Houghton living up to the playful potential of her EP and demos. Several of these songs -- "Sweet Tooth Bird," "NightSwimmer," "Dodecahedron" -- have been around for a while, but their mix of folk, pop, and rock still sounds unique, due in large part to Houghton's lilting, airy voice. Much like her labelmate Polly Scattergood, Houghton is a will-o'-the-wisp, breezing from song to song and sound to sound with lighthearted grace. Fortunately, Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose's carnivalesque atmosphere doesn't detract from what a well-crafted debut it is.

16歳から作曲を始めたというニューキャッスル出身の女性シンガー・ソングライターで、現在21歳。見た目ははっちゃけた感じだけど、歌声のトーンは妙に落ち着きがあって、すぐには〈ああ、こういうタイプね〉と落とし込めないところからジワッとハマってしまうな。ブリティッシュ・フォークとサイケデリック・ポップがミックスされたような音楽性は、若々しさよりも妙に熟成された感覚があって、メロディー展開の仕方も予想のつかないユニークなもの。思いつきでやっているのか、練りに練っているのかパッと聴きではわからないけど、とてつもない才能と個性であることは間違いない。プロデュースを手掛けたのはベン・ヒラー(ブラー、デペッシュ・モードなど)。将来が物凄く楽しみな逸材ですな。
