三世紀初頭、キリスト教がまだ禁制であったローマ帝国の時代の物語。シリア王家の娘テオドラは、異教徒の儀式参加を拒否したために捕えられてしまいます。彼女に課せられた罰は「ローマの兵士たちに蹂躙されること」。彼女の恋人でローマの役人であるディデイムスは何とか彼女を助けようと、牢に忍び込み脱出させようと策を弄すのですが、結局2人とも死刑を宣告されてしまいます。愛のために殉死を遂げる2人の背後に横たわる宗教紛争や自己犠牲の精神などたくさんの要素を盛り込んだ作品ですが、あくまでもオラトリオであるためか、常に格調高く、また壮大な音楽が与えられていて、オペラとは違った味わいを感じさせます。ヘンデル（1685-1759）はこの作品の出来栄えに自信を持っていたようですが、初演は残念ながら不評に終わってしまったのは、実のところ、聴衆はハッピーエンドを求めていたのかもしれませんね。ヘンデルは大激怒したとのことですが……。
