なんだこりゃ、すげえカッコイイぞ。ダン・オーバック(ブラック・キーズ)をプロデューサーに、ホワイトフィールド・ブラザーズのメンバーらをバックに迎えた新作。ヤング・ブラッドたちとの邂逅によって生まれたのは、キャリア中でも図抜けてアグレシッヴな音塊が炸裂した大ロック・サウンドだ。ファンキーかつガレージーな演奏と、全編に立ち込めるグルーミーなアシッド感覚が、怪しいサイケ臭漂う初期のヴードゥー・ロック路線を見事なほどアップ・トゥ・デートさせている。得意の生ピアノはやや控え目ながらも、〈やるな、若造どもめ〉とニヤリとした体でアクの強い歌唱を披露する御大はノリノリだ。ニューオーリンズ色を根底に置きつつ、伝統と革新の狭間を突いたダンの仕事ぶりも光る。骨太の傑作!

ニューオーリンズ音楽大使ドクター・ジョンのノンサッチ移籍第1弾となる新作は、若手NO.1ガレージロックバンド、ブラック・キーズのダン・オーバックがプロデュース! いかにもドクター・ジョンなソングライティングに、ダンを中心にしたツボを押さえたバックによる21世紀型ガンボ・チューンも最高。アフロビート(そういえばニューオーリンズ・ファンクも土着ダンス音楽+ファンクですね)っぽい曲も新鮮。バラード曲もまた素晴らしくて。これはキャリア3本の指に入る傑作だ。
