1930年代、ハリウッドの創世記に作曲された数多くの映画音楽は、その後の世代の作曲家たちにも多大なる影響を与え、ついには孤高のジャンルを創り上げました。そんなジャンルの創生者としてしられるコルンゴルト（アメリカではコーンゴールドで知られる）とワックスマンがハリウッドで活動を始めたのは、皮肉にもナチスの台頭から逃れるためだったということは、案外知られていないものです。彼らは当時のヨーロッパで流行していたシェーンベルクやストラヴィンスキーたち「モダニスト」の音楽からは背を向け、あくまでも「後期ロマン派」の旋律美に拘ることで、あの独特な重厚で肉厚の音楽を映画の世界に定着させたと言えるのではないでしょうか？ そんな姿勢はマックス・スタイナーやバーナード・ハーマンらに受け継がれ、誰もが知るジョン・ウィリアムズやニーノ・ロータへとつながって行くのです。この3枚組は、そんな大きな流れを味わわせてくれる贅沢なセットです。各々の映画会社の冒頭のファンファーレが収録されているのもうれしいところです。
