Brazilian metallists Sepultura continue their aural onslaught. They're one of the best of their ilk, with vocalist Derrick Green's contribution particularly apparent here; he combines genre-specific cookie monster vocals with socially conscious lyrics in a way that renders the latter intelligible without compromising the undeniable aggression and excitement of the former.
The guitars, of course, are the vital ingredient--they're unbelievably heavy sounding, and grind away over Igor Cavaliera's passionate twin kick drumming with a ferocious intensity. But the band always finds room for some nice production touches--witness the sitar breakdown in "One Man Army." There's real intelligence and sonic sensitivity at work here. The smart, politically savvy lyrics mostly belie the musical belligerence, with Jello Biafra contributing a particularly sly, insinuating performance on "Politricks." NATION swings and rocks, loudly--but it'll make you think, too.
