Golden Gate Groove: The Sound of Philadelphia in San Francisco documents a Philadelphia International Records showcase recorded in 1973 at CBS Records' annual convention. Backed by PIR house band MFSB, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, the O'Jays, Billy Paul, and the Three Degrees roll through some of the label's best and most popular material, almost all of which has been considered classic for several decades. The introduction comes from television legend Don Cornelius, whose Soul Train program used "T.S.O.P. (The Sound of Philadelphia)" -- performed here, of course -- as its theme song.

レーベル設立40周年!近作は、フィリー・ソウルの全盛期ともいうべき1973年9月、サンフランシスコで行われたCBS Recordsのコンベンション・ライヴを録音したもの。出演者は、PIRが誇るスターばかり。亡きテディ・ペンダーグラスが率いるハロルド・メルヴィン&ブルー・ノーツは「If You Don't Know Me By Now(ふたりの絆)」、「The Love I Lost」を、さらに「I Miss You」では10分を超えるアツいパフォーマンスを披露。それを引き継いだ女性コーラス・トリオ、スリー・ディグリーズは、大ヒット曲「Dirty Ol' Man」から、全米No.1ヒット「T.S.O.P.(ソウル・トレインのテーマ)」になだれ込んでいく展開。さらに、ビリー・ポールは一世一代のバラード・クラシック「Me And Mrs. Jones」を。そして大トリは、御大エディ・リヴァート率いるPIRの看板グループ、オージェイズが登場。バックは、PIRの腕利きミュージシャン軍団=MFSBが務めているので、バンドの演奏も必聴。司会はTV歌番組「SOUL TRAIN」の名物MC=ドン・コーネリアス!当時のフィリー・ソウルの盛り上がりを体感できるライヴ音源。全盛期のPIRのライヴ音源が正式にリリースされるのは珍しく、しかもこれだけ豪華なラインナップによるライブは実に貴重。
