1926年の中国に駐留する砲艦サンパブロの乗組員であるアメリカ兵たちが、中国国民党と学生の緊張の中に巻き込まれていく人間ドラマあふれる戦争スペクタクル。あらゆる娯楽映画ジャンルにおいて名作を残す巨匠ロバート・ワイズが『サウンド・オブ・ミュージック』の次に取り組み、当時37歳の俊英ジェリー・ゴールドスミスに音楽を任せた。前年の人間ドラマ『いつか見た青い空』でも見せ付けた詩情あふれるメロディのタッチを愛のテーマ的に使用し、豪快ながらも、柔らかな感触の、中国を舞台にしたゆえのアクセントも心地良く、美しい。戦争スペクタクルとしての切れ味するどいオーケストラさばきと、薫るような美しさのストリングスの場面をともに、ゴールドスミスらしさを楽しめる、文句なしの名作。

時代背景としては1920年代の中国を舞台にしたロバート・ワイズ監督(ウェスト・サイド物語、サウンド・オブ・ミュージック他多数)の1966年の作品。スティーヴ・マックイーン、キャンディス・バーゲン、リチャード・クレンナ(ランボーの元上官トラウトマン大佐役)らが出演。音楽は巨匠ジェリー・ゴールドスミスが担当し、豪快且つロマンティツクなサウンドを展開。巨匠ゴールドスミスとしては比較的初期の作品と思われる。さらに60年代半ばのマックイーンは「シンシナティ・キッド」「ネバダ・スミス」「砲艦サンパブロ」「華麗なる賭け」「ブリット」等に出演。どれも面白い作品の数々であり、音楽も又素晴らしい。
