For keen viewers of Saturday Night Live, you'll recognize John Mulaney from his infrequent appearances behind the desk during "Weekend Update" (he's been a writer on the long-running comedy series for the past three seasons). But the comedy nerds among you likely already have some of the more absurdist bits from Mulaney's 2009 standup CD The Top Part memorized. His latest album only expands and improves upon his particular brand of self-deprecating humor. The best bits on New in Town find him recounting embarrassing stories involving his teenage drunken antics, being raised by two lawyers ("I said that I brushed my teeth. I never specified that I brushed my teeth tonight. And if the court reporter reads back my remarks, you will see that I did not perjure myself."), and obsessing over the TV show Law & Order and The New York Post. Like any good comedy album, the almost hour-long set is paced perfectly, leading right up to a raucous closing bit that finds Mulaney in a doctor's office pitifully trying to lie his way into an unneeded Xanax prescription. You'll never hear the words "I'm sorry" the same way again. ~ Robert Ham
