With guest appearances from the Resonators' Faye Houston, singer/songwriter Stac, and the Hackney Colliery Band, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and DJ Adam Scrimshire's The Hollow is just as much a showcase for his Wah Wah 45s label as it is his second studio album. Having built up one of the British jazz-soul scene's most acclaimed rosters, it's understandable that the artist turned label boss would want to showcase his impressive array of talent, but it's his classy and atmospheric production that steals the show, from the spacious industrial beats and fluttering flutes of the eerie instrumental "Afar," to the Wild West-tinged acid jazz of lead single "Home," to the sprawling opener, "A Promise Is All It Was," which flits from plucked acoustic folk to orchestral bossa nova to melancholic lounge jazz with just as much flair and finesse as his critically lauded 2009 debut, Along Came the Devil One Night. The understated Sia-esque nu-soul of "Alignment" and the mellow funk of "Through a Window" (one of two tracks featuring Scrimshire's husky vocals) drift into the kind of self-indulgent noodling that the genre is renowned for, but with stylish yet subtle attempts at Latin soul (the Cinematic Orchestra's Heidi Vogel collaboration "Everything You Say"), skittering brass-band jazz ("Ascension"), and exquisite harp-led folk (the title track), The Hollow is, for the most part, an effortlessly intriguing listen that provides a percussive and slightly avant-garde alternative to the usual chillout fare. ~ Jon O'Brien
