With his score for the 1998 thriller One Tough Cop, Bruce Broughton embraces in full the darkness that underlines much of his previous work. An uncommonly bleak and austere work, especially by Hollywood standards, it exhibits few if any traces of hope, instead trafficking in the suffocating melancholy pioneered by Bernard Herrmann. While employing an arsenal of strings, synthesizers, and percussion, Broughton eschews grand-scale arrangements in favor of intimate, nuanced themes punctuated by bursts of dissonance. Unlike his other notable scores, One Tough Cop offers little variation from track to track, instead establishing a potently visceral atmosphere that grows stronger and more effective as it builds to its inevitably cathartic conclusion. ~ Jason Ankeny|
