2 LPs on 1 CD: ROCK AND ROLLIN' WITH (1956)/THIS IS FATS DOMINO (1957). Antoine "Fats" Domino's brand of New Orleans R&B had scarcely changed since his first record, "The Fat Man," in 1949 but with the advent of rock 'n' roll, his record label encouraged him to push the rhythm, drop the blues, beef up the saxes, write teenage lyrics and call it rock 'n' roll. Fats did not mind: he simply loved playing music. This collection included older material such as "Please Don't Leave Me," but still justified the rock 'n' roll tag. Fats' wife is the subject of "Rosemary" and they had eight children, each of which was christened with a name beginning with "A." Perhaps Fats' records had plenty of bounce because he used to work in a bedsprings factory?

Collectables' Rock N Rollin'/This Is Fats Domino contains two original albums from Fats Domino, one of the most consistent recording artists of the early rock & roll era. During his time at Imperial, he rarely recorded anything that wasn't enjoyable -- not only was his choice of material first-rate, but he could make lesser songs entertaining. Fortunately, both of these albums are filled with both hits ("My Blue Heaven," "Blueberry Hill," "Blue Monday") and fine album tracks, which, along with the bonus tracks "I'm Walkin'" and "It's You I Love," results in a thoroughly entertaining CD. Of course, serious fans who want to dig deeper would be better off with either EMI or Bear Family's box sets, but listeners who don't want to invest in the box sets -- and don't mind less than pristine sound quality and haphazard repackaging -- will enjoy this disc. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine|
