Audio Mixer: Cheeky Paul.
Not content with dominating the progressive house scene with his own output, Canadian DJ/producer Joel Zimmerman, aka Deadmau5, has also left his mark on a stream of underground and commercial floor-fillers over the past five years, the best of which have been collated for this alternative greatest-hits collection, The Remixes. With Zimmerman renowned for his minimal beats and warm layers of synths, the likes of Morgan Page's "The Longest Road" and Marco Demark's cover version of Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" are given the same ethereal melodic treatment afforded to his own breakthrough hit, "I Remember." But keen to show he's no one-trick pony, the mouse head-wearing maverick also takes a stab at twitchy acidic techno (Carbon Community & Burufunk's "Community Funk," NuBreed's "NuFunk"), atmospheric dub (Kamisshake's "Dark Beat"), and industrial electro (Noir's "Super Skunk"), while also putting his own spin on mainstream chart-toppers (Calvin Harris' "I'm Not Alone"), old-school club classics (Carl Cox & Yousef's "I Want You [Forever]"), and cult favorites (James Talk's "Remote," Francesco Diaz & Young Rebels' "It's Our Future") alike. Like most remix compilations, it's a mixed bag, with some improving on the source material (his personal favorite remix, Jorgensen & BSD's "I Don't Care"), some removing the most anthemic qualities of the originals (Energy 52's "Cafe del Mar," Hybrid's "Finished Symphony"), and some that sound like they've been knocked out in just a couple of minutes (Prime 33's "Burn," Mike DiScala & Colin Airey's "Space and Time"). But as an overview of his interpretive talents, The Remixes is a solid collection that tells you pretty much everything you need to know so far. ~ Jon O'Brien
