ミンコフスキも惚れ込んだルーシー・クロウ、鮮烈のヘンデル・アルバム！
今英国で一番注目されているソプラノ、ルーシー・クロウがHMFからソロ・アルバムでデビュー！ 澄み切った美声と鮮やかなテクニック、華のある存在感に美貌と、何拍子も揃った逸材です。すでにマルク・ミンコフスキが重用しており、ハイドンの聖チェチリア・ミサなど（naive V5183）で素晴らしいソロを披露、さらに大きな話題となったバッハのミサ曲 ロ短調（V5145）では重要な第一ソプラノに抜擢されるなど、人気・注目度ともに現在急上昇中。しかも彼女はMETでモーツァルト「ティートの慈悲」のセルヴィーリア、ベルリン・ドイツオペラでのヴェルディ「リゴレット」のジルダなど、古楽以外でのお呼びもかかるほどの実力の持ち主。近いうちに大ブレイク間違いなしの逸材です。
そんなクロウの初となるソロアルバムがHMFから登場です！ しかも彼女の声にピッタリのヘンデル。ヘンデルは、1706年後半から1710年までの約3年間、イタリア各地を巡り、イタリア人ですら「Viva il caro Sassone（ザクセン人万歳！）」と絶賛するほどの人気を博しました。あの有名な「リナルド」のアリア‘私を泣かせて下さい’の原曲である「時と悟りの勝利」の‘棘は捨て置き’はこの時期の作品。後のロンドンでの活躍の源泉となった音楽が多々あります。このアルバムでは、「棄てられたアルミーダ」や「愛の狂乱」、「アルプスの山よ」のようなソロ・カンタータ、「時と悟りの勝利」、「復活」、「クローリ、ティルシとフィレーノ」、「アミンタとフィッリーデ」といった大規模、中規模の声楽作品のアリアを中心に、クロウの魅力が存分に引き出せる曲を揃えています。バックは、英国バロック音楽の重鎮で、ことにヘンデルのスペシャリストとして知られるハリー・ビケットと、2007年来彼が音楽監督を務めるイングリッシュ・コンサート。ヘンデリアンにはたまらない一枚に仕上がっています。

"Il caro sassone," the dear Saxon, was George Frederick Handel, during the first part of his career in Italy (1706-1710). He wrote music for various patrons there, with the result that his vocal compositions are a mixed bag: some extreme creations of the very ambitious 20-something Handel was, some of them soberer as a result of the purposes for which they were tailored. It's a fairly obscure corner of the repertory for a young soprano looking to make a name, but you can see why the British singer Lucy Crowe chose it: the music allowed her to display the considerable range of which her voice is capable. She has a compelling yet rather curious voice that will probably stir divergent reactions. In big martial arias she can deliver plenty of power, but in smaller pieces she often adopts a nearly vibrato-free timbre (vibrato creeps in unpredictably as a kind of ornament) thoroughly marked by the early music movement. When she extends that sound into her upper register, where she is perfectly capable of creating a creamier tone, the results will be either gutsy or highly questionable according to your perspective. Not so much under debate is the accuracy and sensitivity of the veteran historical-instrument group the English Concert, whose leader, Harry Bicket, is evolving into a fine conductor of Baroque opera. The group accompanies Crowe and performs alone with liveliness and precision in a few instrumental sonatas. Sampling this album may tell you whether you fall into the circle of Crowe's fans, but there's no doubt about it: she deserves to be heard.
