Jerry Garcia Band: Jerry Garcia (vocals, guitar); Melvin Seals (organ, keyboards); John Kahn (bass); David Kemper (drums); Jackie LaBranch, Gloria Jones (background vocals). Recorded live between 1989 and 1993. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Though the Grateful Dead was more than the sum of its parts, there's no denying the individual gifts of the band's visionary leader. Jerry Garcia's occasional outings with the Jerry Garcia Band proved that the guitarist/vocalist could be consistently compelling in contexts outside the Dead. This two-disc live set, recorded at various concerts between 1984 and 1994, finds the group functioning essentially as a world class bar band, playing songs that weren't necessarily influences on Garcia, but rather simply songs he liked, regardless of vintage. Highlights include perhaps history's slowest rendition of Chuck Berry's"Let it Rock," a nicely languid version of Bob Dylan's "Positively 4th Street," where Garcia manages convincing impressions of both the song's author and guitar hero Mike Bloomfield's snarling Telecaster, and a surprisingly convincing (i.e, horny sounding) take on the Stones' "Let's Spend the Night Together." Throughout, of course, Garcia displays the same liquid fretwork and homey vocal charm that added so much to the Dead's sound. His compatriots provide staunch support throughout, without ever hogging the limelight.
