Though the Grateful Dead was more than the sum of its parts, there's no denying the individual gifts of the band's visionary leader. Jerry Garcia's occasional outings with the Jerry Garcia Band proved that the guitarist/vocalist could be consistently compelling in other contexts outside of the Dead. Though this two-disc live recording finds the group tackling a couple of tunes frequently played by the Dead ("Sugaree," and the classic Bob Dylan ballad "Knockin' on Heaven's Door"), they plumb a wealth of other sources, too. Tackling everything from reggae (Jimmy Cliff's "Sitting Here in Limbo") to Motown soul (the Temptations' Smokey Robinson-penned hit "The Way You Do the Things You Do"), Garcia displays the same liquid fretwork and homey vocal charm that added so much to the Dead's sound. His compatriots provide staunch support throughout, without ever hogging the limelight.
