商品の紹介
Rolling Stone (12/9/99, p.78) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...full of visionary, hallucinatory recastings of old music, as well as originals that twist traditional American themes...just beyond the realm of the ordinary....reminds us just how delicate and precious that [Dead] magic was." Spin (2/00, pp.114-5) - 7 out of 10 - "...the old gods of tour ecstasy....the whole shebang cops the aura of Jerry's demise and assembles a morbid archival loviness....a sonic narrative traces an evolving free-form sorrow along its tragic arc..." Entertainment Weekly (12/3/99, pp.97-8) - "...chronicles the Dead's history in the language they spoke best: live performance. There's plenty of revelation..." - Rating: A- The Wire (1/00, p.89) - "...This epochal 5 CD box set of previously unreleased live/studio recordings and rehearsals spanning the group's 30 year haul takes its lead from Dead archivist Dick Latvala's pioneering series [of concert recordings]....a rewarding journey for Deadheads and newcomers alike..." Dirty Linen (6-7/00, p.64) - "...Does as good a job as possible letting neophytes learn what made the band special, while providing enough rare and unexpected performances to keep the diehard fans happy."
Rovi
By the late '90s, box sets increasingly addressed the desires of ardent fans; since the uninitiated were satisfied with smaller compilations, a box set consisting mostly or entirely of unissued material often seemed more appropriate. Even within this paradigm, however, the Grateful Dead are an anomaly -- most of their studio recordings are disdained by fans devoted to privately distributed tapes of their live performances. How, then, to approach a Dead box set? The compilers have scoured the group's extensive vault for a five-CD set which includes only a few tracks that have ever been released in any medium. Adopting a roughly chronological sequencing, they sought out rare songs and, especially, performance highlights spanning the Dead's 30-year career. The compilers are second-generation Deadheads, fans who came to the band in the '70s and '80s, responding to the marathon-length live instrumental improvisations. Time and again, the songs here begin in normal fashion and then take off into uncharted territory; as long as the soloing is interesting, it doesn't matter if lyrics are blown or the singing is off-key. In many cases, the compilers are so enamored of the group's interplay that they include excerpts without the songs that begin or conclude them. The rare songs include selections from the Dead's unreleased 1965 sessions for Autumn Records, outtakes from Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, and rehearsals and live performances of songs intended for a Dead album that was never formally recorded. In short, So Many Roads (1965-1995) was obviously made by Deadheads for Deadheads. The Dead have succeeded over the years by addressing the interests of a cult that welcomes neophytes but also revels in its exclusivity; it's no surprise that their version of a box-set retrospective holds true to that course. ~ William Ruhlmann

Probably the most elegantly conceived Dead box set to date, SO MANY ROADS truly boasts more than just five discs of live retrospective greatness. The starkly white, cloth-covered package includes a hard-cover mini-book of essays and photos as well as track-by-track annotations that offer enjoyable insights into each recording. The music is diligently compiled, ranging from the edgy, soul-blues days of the mid-'60s Autumn Records sessions to the band's time-worn, graceful maturity of the mid-'90s. Standouts here include the frenetic drive of an early "Caution," with Pigpen on keys, while Keith Godchaux adds his magic to the old sunflower "Eyes of the World." "So Many Roads," is a poetic last touch on the part of the compilation producers, with Jerry in deceptively fine form. His soaring, emotional delivery makes for a wonderful--if saddening--swan song at what was to be Dead's final show in the summer of 1995. And the surprise snatch of dialogue tagged onto the track following a few seconds of silence is a sweet piece of punctuation.
