Probably the most elegantly conceived Dead box set to date, SO MANY ROADS truly boasts more than just five discs of live retrospective greatness. The starkly white, cloth-covered package includes a hard-cover mini-book of essays and photos as well as track-by-track annotations that offer enjoyable insights into each recording. The music is diligently compiled, ranging from the edgy, soul-blues days of the mid-'60s Autumn Records sessions to the band's time-worn, graceful maturity of the mid-'90s.
Standouts here include the frenetic drive of an early "Caution," with Pigpen on keys, while Keith Godchaux adds his magic to the old sunflower "Eyes of the World." "So Many Roads," is a poetic last touch on the part of the compilation producers, with Jerry in deceptively fine form. His soaring, emotional delivery makes for a wonderful--if saddening--swan song at what was to be Dead's final show in the summer of 1995. And the surprise snatch of dialogue tagged onto the track following a few seconds of silence is a sweet piece of punctuation.
