DICK'S PICKS VOLUME TEN is the tenth in a series of archival live Dead CDs that were overseen by the late Dick Latvala. It differs from the band's "From The Vault" series in that the "Dick's Picks" releases do not feature entire concerts and are mastered from two- and four-track recordings, rather than eight- and sixteen-track recordings. Latvala was the official keeper of the Dead's tape archives; the Grateful Dead organization describes him as "one of the original Dead tapers."
The Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Donna Jean Godchaux (vocals); Keith Godchaux (keyboards); Phil Lesh (bass, background vocals); Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzman (drums).
Recorded at Winterland Arena, San Francisco, California on December 29 & 30, 1977. Includes liner notes by Michael Nash.
The Dead's 1977 New Year's stand was a majestic ending to a superlative year for the band, with the 12/29 show, included here in its entirety, the week's crown jewel. Not because the band's playing on this evening so brightly outshined the other performances, but because of a Dead phenomenon called the "break-out," meaning the live performance of a song the band hadn't played in a long time.
On Thursday the 29th, the audience at the Winterland was treated to the "China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider" two-fer for the first time in over three years. After an extended, spacey version of "Playing in the Band" disintegrates into a near-ambient, tension-filled space and near-silence, Garcia jumps out with the "China Cat" guitar lick and the audience roars in instant approval. As the rest of the band joins in, the audience just keeps getting louder and louder, adding to the already fevered pitch of the music's propulsion (who's inspiring who?). As "Rider"'s crescendo settles into the opening, lilting strains of "China Doll," the audience roars once more in thanks. This is a rare taped insight into the actions of a group mind.
