DICK'S PICKS VOLUME FOUR is currently available through mail-order by contacting Grateful Dead Merchandising at 1-800-CAL-DEAD or online at www.dead.net.
DICK'S PICKS VOLUME FOUR is the fourth in a series of archival live Dead CDs that were overseen by the late Dick Latvala. It differs from the band's "From The Vault" series in that the "Dick's Picks" releases do not feature entire concerts and are mastered from two- and four-track recordings, rather than eight- and sixteen-track recordings. Latvala was the official keeper of the Dead's tape archives; the Grateful Dead organization describes him as "one of the original Dead tapers."
Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (organ, percussion, background vocals); Phil Lesh (electric bass, background vocals); Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart (drums).
Additional personnel: The Great Zacherle (spoken vocals).
Recorded live at The Fillmore East, New York, New York on February 13 & 14, 1970. Includes liner notes by Bear.

DICK'S PICKS 4 is among the true musical motherlodes in this series of archival Grateful Dead releases, for few shows in the band's storied history possess (and deliver) the goods like this February 1970 Fillmore East stand. This is the myth of the psychedelic beasts come to life. Sure, the integration of roots music the Dead embraced on their studio albums of that year is present. But signs of this tradition are not this set's highlights.
Instead, dig the hairy, electric jazz band--as adept at evoking lovely melodies in their improvisations (listen for Simon & Garfunkel's "Feeling Groovy" within the confines of the soothing, half-hour-long "Dark Star") as they were at embracing the chaos of the rhythm of life ("Caution!" and "Feedback" are all their titles purport and more). And, of course, in the middle of it all is Pigpen, Haight-Ashbury's finest white male blues belter, beckoning everyone to turn on their "Lovelight," pushing his band "just a little bit higher." DICK'S PICKS 4 is an indispensable aid in understanding why some regard this band as highly as they do.
