By and large, singer Ronnie James Dio is best known for singing about "circles and rings, dragons and kings" (to quote the Black Sabbath classic, "Neon Knights") and other related "medieval" subjects during his career. In other words, not exactly bluesy material made famous by the likes of Led Zeppelin, the Faces, and the Rolling Stones. But all musicians have to start from somewhere influence-wise and, as evidenced by the 2011 archival release, And Before Elf...There Were Elves, Ronnie honed his singing skills while belting out such songs as "You Shook Me," "Stay with Me," and "Little Queenie." While Elf remains Dio's best-known pre-Rainbow band, the recordings included here are from an earlier version of the group, the Elves (hence the album's title). Comprised of in-concert recordings (with the audience turned way down), And Before Elf...There Were Elves is a snapshot of a young-and-upcoming Dio, before he found his stylistic niche. In addition to fun readings of the aforementioned cover songs, you'll also find the lovey-dovey piano power ballad, "Wake Up Sunshine," as well as such heavy blues-rockers as "Buckingham Blues." Understandably, Dio was still perfecting his singing style that would one day become synonymous with heavy metal. But as heard throughout And Before Elf.There Were Elves, Dio also had no problem handling other rock-based styles, as well. ~ Greg Prato
